HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green baseball team welcomed the Cornell Big Red for the first of three games on Friday. Pitching dominated early and despite the Big Red getting on the board first, Dartmouth was able to pull ahead thanks to
Jackson Hower and
Camden Rush to defeat the Big Red, 5-3.
Â
With the win, Dartmouth moves to 9-21 on the season and 6-10 in Ivy League play.
Â
Nate Isler for the Big Green and Carson Mayfield for the Big Red were dominant through four innings. Isler allowed only two hits while Mayfield kept the Big Green off the base paths entirely.
Â
Cornell finally got a piece of Isler in the top of the fifth, leading off the inning with a walk and back-to-back singles. A fielder's choice pushed the game's first run across, giving the Big Red a 1-0 lead.
Â
Ehan Brown earned a four pitch walk to start the bottom of the inning for the Big Green. With one out,
Jackson Hower hit only the second pitch he saw deep into left field and out of Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park, giving Dartmouth a 2-1 lead.
Â
The Big Red quickly responded knocking three hits and scoring the game tying run in the top of the sixth, making it a 2-2 game.
Â
Dartmouth could not generate anything in its half of the inning, giving Cornell an opportunity to retake the lead. It did just that as Luke Johnson led off the inning with a home run to put the Big Red up 3-2.
Â
In the eighth inning, a hit by pitch and two singles scored two runs, giving the Big Green a 4-3 lead. The two runs came off the bat of
Camden Rush who continues to dominate at the plate, bringing his weekly total to seven RBI and his batting average up to .303, second best on the team.
Â
Rush would come around to score on a wild pitch, extending Dartmouth's lead to two.
Â
The Big Red threatened in the ninth inning, leading off with back-to-back walks before loading the bases on a single with only one out.
Â
Danny Will, who came into the game in relief of
Kyle Klaric-Schell, got the Big Red to bounce into a double play, sealing the 5-3 win for the Big Green.
Â
Isler's final line was three runs on eight hits in six innings on the mound. He walked only one and struck out eight, both a season and career high.
Â
Klaric-Schell pitched two scoreless and hitless innings to earn the win. He dealt two walks and added two strikeouts.
Â
Will earned the save for the Big Green, allowing only one hit in his scoreless frame.
Â
The Big Green and Big Red were originally scheduled to wrap the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. The two teams will now play a single game Saturday, April 26 at 3 p.m. and on Sunday, April 27 at 11:30 a.m.
Â
Sunday will be Senior Day, as Dartmouth will honor its nine seniors. You can follow both the remaining weekend games via live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
