WORCESTER, Mass. – Led by a second-place finish from its varsity eight, the Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team put forth an impressive effort at Eastern Sprints on Sunday, picking up three medals. It marks the third straight season the Big Green have had three of their five boats medal, but the first time since 2022 both their 1V and 2V have made the podium.
Â
Overall, Dartmouth has picked up 14 medals at sprints over the past four years.
Â
"Overall, it was a really good team day," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "Each of our boats raced really well. I think everyone beat their seed. To come out of here with three medals is a great day for us."
Â
Entering the weekend unbeaten in dual racing, the varsity eight showed its speed early, winning its morning heat with a time of 5:41.804. Brown came in second at 5:43.854, marking the first time the Ivy League foes squared off this season.
Â
In the grand final to close the day, the Big Green got off to a slow start, but picked things up in a big way to jump back into second place (5:35.577), less than two seconds behind Harvard in first (5:33.895). In total, less than six seconds separated first through sixth.
Â
"They had a pretty bad start, spotted the field four to five seats it looked like from the video," said Allen. "I'm really impressed with the way they stuck together. To row through a field of that caliber from 6th to 2nd, and to finish that close to Harvard, was really impressive. I'm really proud of those guys."
Â
The second varsity eight earned bronze at sprints for a second straight year. In its grand final, the Big Green posted a time of 5:45.824, ahead of Syracuse (5:47.884), Yale (5:49.078) and Penn (5:50.426).
Â
"That's a boat that's been getting better all year," said Allen. "Their first race at Yale this year, they got jumped at the start and lost by a big margin. From there, they've doubled down and committed to getting better week after week and they've done exactly that. To see the progress throughout the dual season and to see them come through today with a medal is pretty awesome."
Â
Dartmouth's other medalist was its fourth varsity eight, coming in third with a time of 5:54.415. The Big Green topped Syracuse (5:56.675), Penn (6:01.655) and Brown (6:07.141).
Â
The Big Green's 3V also narrowly missed a medal, coming in fourth in the grand final (5:53.420), less than two seconds behind Yale in third (5:51.776).
Â
Dartmouth's 5V had one race, an afternoon grand final, and came in sixth (6:20.033).
Â
The Big Green now look ahead to the IRA National Championship two weekends from now in Camden, N.J.
