HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth senior Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) broke the school record for assists in a career, but Princeton prevailed, 13-9, in Ivy League women's lacrosse action Saturday.
Douthett set up sophomore Katherine Chiusano (Medford, N.J.) with 52 seconds left in the game for the 93rd of her career. Jen Greene '98 set the previous Dartmouth mark of 92 from 1995-98.
The No. 17 Big Green's slim hopes for its fifth straight NCAA bid appear to have vanished as the Tigers improved to 3-2 in the Ivy League and 7-5 overall. With three non-conference games remaining, Dartmouth is 7-5 overall, 4-3 in the conference. Penn has claimed the automatic bid by virtue of winning the Ivy title, while Yale has victories over both Princeton and Dartmouth.
No. 15 Princeton scored the first two goals and pushed to a 5-1 lead on Holly McGarvie's goal with 17:17 left in the first half. Dartmouth's Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up back-to-back markers to reduce the deficit to 5-3 with 13:29 remaining until the break, but that was as close as the Big Green could get.
"What do you say about today? Princeton outplayed us," said head coach Amy Patton. "I wouldn't say they outmatched us, they outplayed us. So you've got to hand it to them. They came into our field, and they wanted it more. It was very clear."
Chiusano led Dartmouth with three goals and one assist, and Szefi also had an assist. With one goal and one assist, Douthett kept alive her consecutive game scoring streak. She's now tallied in 52, third longest in the nation.
Also contributing offensively were junior Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) with one goal and one assist, while seniors Margo Duke (Englewood, Colo.) and Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) each had a goal.
For Princeton, senior Kathleen Miller had four goals, while junior Katie Lewis-Lamonica and sophomore Kristen Schwab both had three. The Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak to Dartmouth.
Added Patton, "The one silver lining of this year is that I look out there and see five to even six freshmen on the field. That bodes for a really experienced future. I think we're going through some growing pains right now, but at the same time, I am really proud of these kids. We've had a lot of ups and downs this year, and they're trying to hang in there. That's all I can ask them to do."
Dartmouth's next game is Wednesday, April 25 at Boston University.
