? Maryland, the nation's number two ranked team, had too much early firepower
for the 13th ranked Dartmouth women's lacrosse team and took a 17-8 victory this afternoon.
The Terps came out hard from the opening draw, scoring nine
unanswered goals in the first 14 minutes to take a 9-0 lead at 16:09. Goals
came from seven different players with Caitlyn McFadden spurring the attack
with three assists and one goal.
Dartmouth (3-2) got on the
board at 14:16 when senior Kristen Barry (Duxbury,
Mass.) found sophomore Eliza Bennett (Darien, Conn.)
for Bennett's 11th goal of the season. The Terps found the back of
the net again before Barry scored an unassisted goal and classmate Kate Labrum
(Wallingford, Pa.)
tallied her first of the season to make it 10-3, Maryland. Maryland (5-1) rattled off two quick goals
in the final 44 seconds of the half to make it 12-3 at the break.
It was more of the same in the early goings of the second
half,with Maryland
scoring three times including two from Katie Princiotto to take a 15-3 lead at
19:46.
Dartmouth rallied from that
point to score four unanswered goals by four different players: Kat Collins (Darien, Conn.), Cate
Goytisolo (Cockeysville, Md.),
Bennett and Greta Meyer (Denver,
Colo.) to make it 15-7, Terps at
6:05.
Maryland scored two more
before Berry got one past Sarah Sommaripa, Maryland's third goalkeeper
of the game, in the last minute to take it to 17-8.
Sophomore Chelsea Kirk (Hunt Valley,
Md.) started the game in goal before classmate
Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) played the final 44 minutes with
seven saves.
Barry was Dartmouth's
leading scorer with two goals and two assists while Meyer added three
groundballs and two caused turnovers to her goal. McFadden finished with seven
points on three goals and four assists to lead Maryland.
The Big Green is back in action at home next weekend when it
opens the Ivy slate with Yale on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
