Hanover, N.H. ? A balanced scoring attack that included 10 goals by freshmen gave the 17th ranked Dartmouth women's lacrosse team a 14-5 win over Columbia this afternoon on Memorial Field.
The Big Green gained some redemption after yesterday's heartbreaking overtime loss to Yale in its Ivy opener. Dartmouth now stands at 4-3 overall, 1-1 Ivy while Columbia drops to 3-3, 0-2 Ivy. Rookies Greta Meyer (Denver, Colo.) and Kat Collins (Darien, Conn.) stole the show with five and four goals each, respectively. Collins led all scorers with six points.
Dartmouth scored just 57 seconds into the game when senior Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) hit Meyer with a nice pass for the quick goal. Columbia evened the score at 25:02 when Brittany Shannon had an unassisted tally.
Then the Big Green, led by the rookie Meyer, kicked it into high gear with four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead at 13:22. She started the run with an unassisted goal at 20:57 before scoring again at 16:38 off a feed from classmate Collins. Collins was at it again just over a minute later when she got the ball to Barry for a goal at 15:21 to make it 4-1, Dartmouth. Two minutes after that, Dartmouth had a long possession, earning a free-position attempt that went wide of the goal. The Big Green chased down the loose ball and freshman Kathleen Wallace (Shoreham, N.Y.) sent the ball into Meyer who made it 5-1, Dartmouth.
Columbia got on the scoreboard again immediately following that goal, when Glynn won the draw and raced down the field and sent a low shot past Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) at 12:39. The Big Green would not be outdone, as Eliza Bennett (Darien, Conn.) connected perfectly with a streaking Wallace for a one-timer at 10:51 to make it 6-2, Dartmouth. Meyer picked up her fifth goal of the half at 4:51 off a pass from Barry before Collins scored the last goal of the half just over a minute later with an unassisted tally.
The Big Green led 8-2 at the half after holding an 18-12 shot advantage.
In the second, Dartmouth picked up right where it left off scoring just 22 seconds into the period when Barry won the opening draw and pushed the ball up to senior Kate Labrum (Wallingford, Pa.) to make it 9-2, Dartmouth. The Big Green scored again under a minute later when Collins had an unassisted tally at 28:47. In the defensive end, Liz Spence (Concord, Mass.) caused a Columbia turnover and got the ball to Meyer who started the breakaway. She fed it to Barry who found Labrum again for her second goal of the half at 25:46, putting the Green up 11-2.
After the fiery start, things slowed down offensively for both squads. The Big Green eventually scored at 12:13 when Cate Goytisolo (Cockeysville, Md.) converted a free-position, Dartmouth's only good one (1-of-4) of the day to make it 12-2. Columbia broke the running clock just under three minutes later when Glynn scored her second of the day, unassisted at 9:55. Glynn continued to take matters into her own hands with her third goal of the day at 6:12. Dartmouth's Collins responded to Columbia's run with back-to-back goals in the span of 52 seconds to make it 14-4, Green at 2:05. The Lions got one more on the board when Glynn scored again off a feed from Marisa Marcellino to take it to the final, 14-5.
The Big Green outshot the Lions 28-24 overall. Wadland had a stellar afternoon in goal, making 12 saves and picking up four groundballs. Columbia's Emma Mintz did a nice job as well, making nine stops.
Collins finished with six points on four goals and two assists while Meyer had five points as did Barry, with four assists and one goal. Glynn led Columbia with four of her team's five goals.
Dartmouth is back in action on Saturday, March 29 when it heads to Brown for an Ivy matchup at 3:00 p.m.
