VESTAL, N.Y. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team put forth a dominant effort Sunday afternoon to defeat Binghamton, 19-6.
What was a close game for the first 15 minutes or so was completely blown wide open by the Big Green (1-2), who tallied the final five goals of the first half and then outscored the Bearcats (0-4) in the second, 7-2.
Leading the charge was senior
Kierra Sweeney and her seven goals, a figure that ranks as the most by a Dartmouth player since
Ellie Carson scored seven against UMass Lowell last spring.
In the nearly five decades of the women's lacrosse program, a student-athlete has only scored seven or more goals in a games 21 times, making it one of the rarest accomplishments for any Big Green player.
The fifth goal of the afternoon for Sweeney proved to be her 100th career point, making her the 33rd player in program history to reach the milestone total.
In a contest that featured 19 goals for the visiting team, it was more than just one player finding the back of the net.
Sophia Turchetta came off the bench to notch three scores, while
Kellen D'Alleva,
Campbell Brewer and
Katie Bourque all had a pair of tallies.
Veta Mayer,
Schuyler Bixby and
Elizabeth Mastrio all scored once as well.
D'Alleva had a career day as she dished out three assists in addition to her two goals for a five-point afternoon, besting her previous mark by one. Mastio also had a trio of helpers as 11-of-the-19 goals were credited with assists.
Kathryn Giroux and Mayer each boasted six draw controls in the game, nearly matching the entire output of the Bearcats (8) by themselves.
All three goalkeepers saw action with
Kiera Vrindten getting the start and the win with freshman
Becca Wade seeing her first collegiate minutes as she and
Charlotte Wahle closed out the game in the pipes. The trio combined to make five saves.
With Dartmouth attempting 47 shots in the game — including 30 in the first half – Binghamton goalkeeper Taylor Passuello was tested early and often, finishing the game with 20 stops.
Paige Volkmann was the lone BU player with multiple goals, scoring twice, while also picking up an assist.
Dartmouth will play at No. 1 Boston College on Wednesday afternoon. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Hanover, but was moved back a day and locations changed due to expected weather conditions in the Upper Valley. The 2019 home opener will now be Saturday afternoon against visiting Brown.
