HANOVER, N.H. – The rust was not there for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team Sunday afternoon.
Â
Coming off a two-week break for exams, the Big Green (3-3) exploded for a 19-7 win against visiting UMass (5-3) at Scully-Fahey Field.Â
Â
Dartmouth came into the game averaging just shy of 14 goals a game, but erupted for 19 in a contest that used a running clock for the final 31:25 of play.
Â
Ellie Carson and
Katie Bourque both had four goals each, while
Campbell Brewer and
Kierra Sweeney found the back of the net three times apiece in the contest.
Â
Kellen D'Alleva scored twice and dished out four helpers for a six-point game. She now has 14 points (4-10-14) in her last two outings.
Â
Making her first career start, freshman goalkeeper
Becca Wade was stellar, stopping seven shots. The defense in front of her held a Minutewomen offense that was scoring more than 18 goals per game to 11 below that season-long average, while allowing just 23 total shot attempts.
Â
"We improved on many of our team goals since our last game, and it was pleasing to see our effort in practice pay off today," head coach
Danielle Spencer said. "Thank you to our amazing Big Green fans who kept us energized for all 60 minutes!"
Â
The home team was in control throughout the entirety of the game, leading early and never looking back. A 9-0 run over a span of 18:38 between the end of the first half and start of the second put the game all but out of reach for the visitors.
Â
Campbell Brewer's first of the day and 11th of the season proved to be the game winner and came less than 10 minutes into the contest.
Â
A 27-10 edge in shot attempts in the opening half set the pace with Dartmouth hanging on for a 39-23 advantage when it was all said and done.
Â
UMass came into the game as the top draw control team in the country, averaging 20.17 per game, but were held to just nine on Sunday to the Green and White's 18. Additionally, Dartmouth won 7-of-8 second-half draw controls to thwart any possible hope of a Massachusetts comeback bid.
Â
The Big Green are back in action Friday at Columbia. Game time in New York is 5 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
