PHILADELPHIA – Trailing for the entire first half, the No. 24 Dartmouth women's lacrosse team used a pair of runs in the second half to turn a deficit into a four-goal victory Saturday afternoon against No. 9 Penn.
Â
The Big Green (8-3) moved to 4-1 in the Ivy League with the 15-11 win and now own the tiebreaker with the previously unbeaten Quakers (9-3, 3-1 Ivy) should they finish with the same record at the end of the year.
Â
Dartmouth didn't have its first lead of the day until just under 19 minutes to play, moving ahead, 8-7. A Penn goal right out of halftime pushed the home team's lead to 7-4 and its clamp-down defense that had been strong all day looked like the difference.
Â
However, a pair of four-goal runs turned a deficit into a lead and the Green and White never looked back. An 11-5 edge in the second half guided Dartmouth to its first win over the Quakers since 2016 and just the second in regular-season play in the last 12 years.
Â
"The credit goes to every single player on our team, and my amazing assistant coaches, for all of the effort and focus they put into our preparation this week," head coach
Danielle Spencer said. "We will enjoy this bus ride home!"
Â
Kierra Sweeney and
Ellie Carson both finished with four points on the afternoon. Sweeney scored three times with the first of the day marking her 100th career goal. Carson found the back of the net four times in the win with three coming in the second-half surge.
Â
Kellen D'Alleva controlled a lot of the Dartmouth attack, finishing with a goal and five assists for a game-high six points. Thanks to her fifth game of four or more assists this season, D'Alleva now has 34 on the year, tied for the second-best single-season total in program history and only five off the record with three games remaining before postseason play.
Â
Junior
Kiera Vrindten was outstanding in goal, making 14 saves in earning the win. Several of her stops denied the home team when a goal could have swung momentum back in its favor.
Â
Campbell Brewer also scored three times in the contest, while
Sophia Turchetta had two in the first half. Four Penn players had two goals, with Gabby Rosenzweig and Erin Barry also added a pair of assists each for four-point games.
Â
After Penn had a 7-4 edge in draw controls in the opening half, the Big Green stepped up and won 10-of-17 in the second frame. Claire Marshal and
Katie Bourque both had four in the game, with
Kathryn Giroux collecting a game-high six.
Â
The Big Green head to Burlington to take on Vermont Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
