HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's rowing competed for the Parents' Cup against Cornell on Saturday, rowing on the Connecticut River for the first and only time this season. The Big Red retained the cup by winning the Varsity 8.
“We had great racing today across the board,” head coach Linda Muri said. “Cornell is a strong competitor and tends to pick up speed as the season goes on, so I was very pleased with the results. The Varsity 8 got off the line well and pushed out to a few seat lead early on. Cornell made a strong push in all their crews going into the second thousand, and we weren't able to respond enough to keep the lead. However, the fight was there and we're looking to build off today's result going into the Sprints tomorrow in Worcester.”
The Red won the Parents' Cup by completing the 2,000-meter course in 6:24.8, and were followed less than four seconds later by the Green with a time of 6:28.7.
Dartmouth went on to win the next two races. In the second varsity, the Big Green (6:30.5) left almost six seconds between them and the Big Red (6:36.0). They left a bigger gap in the Varsity 4, winning with a 7:08.9. Cornell followed later in 7:20.2.
“The second varsity led wire to wire with a very smart, focused race,” Muri continued, “and the Varsity 4 capitalized on a solid start, which allowed them to be in a position to patiently move away from the Big Red.”
The Green entered two boats in the second Varsity 4, going 7:32.2 and 7:56.4. In the final event of the day, the third Varsity 8, Cornell took first (6:44.1) and Dartmouth crossed the line just over 10 seconds later (6:55.6).
“Although the lower boats didn't record wins,” Muri concluded, “they rowed well, incorporating the week's focus into their races.”
On Sunday, the Big Green will head to Worcester for the Eastern Sprints Regatta. Last season, Dartmouth advanced four boats to the Grand Final and one to the Petite Final and were awarded second place with 108 points, finishing behind Radcliffe with 136.
