Men's Lightweight Rowing
at Cornell
Q&A with Darren Cheng
1) Why Dartmouth?
I came to Dartmouth because when I was visiting schools, Dartmouth was the only college where I saw that it's students actually loved
being there. It felt like everyone worked really hard but also knew how to play hard. It also helped that Dartmouth was one of the few
Sprints schools for lightweight rowing.
2) How long have you been rowing and what got you interested in rowing?
I have been rowing since 8th grade - so right now, it's my 8th year rowing. An older couple, the Rauchfuss's, that lived a few houses over
from the one I grew up in had a daughter, Laura, who was training for the U.S. Olympic Rowing Team. The mother always came over to our house
and talked about what Laura was doing and I decided to try it out. After the first season, I fell in love with the intensity, commitment,
and drive that comes with the sport. I made the first Greenwich Varsity Men's team my sophomore year of high school and was captain my
Junior and Senior years. Our team took our state championships both my Junior and Senior years and were 5th at the grand finals at SRAAs my
senior year. After that, I came to Dartmouth and have been on the lightweight team ever since.
3) Have you won any academic or rowing awards recently?
I recently became a Neukom Scholar for the Neukom Institute for Computational Science here at Dartmouth.
4) Tell me something interesting about you that might come as a surprise to your teammates.
My grandpa, who is now 99, was a spy for the Chinese government during WWII. During that time, he was once captured by a Japanese
militia. While being marched to the site of his execution, he managed to sneak away. Had he not, he would have been executed and I wouldn't
exist. Thanks Grandpa!
5) What other activities do you participate in on campus?
I'll be Vice President of the Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity in the spring. I also study percussion with a private tutor on campus. In
high school, I used to be captain of the drumline and percussion ensemble but I haven't had the chance to perform here at Dartmouth.
6) What are your future plans, if any.
After college, I plan on getting some job in the technology field, since I am a computer science major and a digital arts minor.
