Junior (2014-15): Sat three seat in the second varsity 8 that won against Boston College, UMass and MIT (8:07.10) … at the Eastern Sprints Regatta, she sat three seat in the varsity 4B that took second in the Grand Final (7:41.46) … was two seat in the varsity 4B boat that placed second in the Petite Final at the Ivy League Championship (8:03.276) … CRCA Scholar Athlete.
Q&A with Abby Thornburg
Why Dartmouth?
When I was trying to decide where to apply to college it was hard to differentiate between some of the schools; all those I was interested were smaller, undergraduate focused, somewhat rural, and academically rigorous. It wasn't until I visited Dartmouth that I knew it was my favorite. I couldn't get over how welcoming and down-to-earth people were and how beautiful the landscape was. Plus, I really liked the rowing team!
How long have you been rowing and what interested you about rowing?
I became interested in rowing after attending a Stanford rowing camp four summers ago, but I didn't pursue it until now. Throughout high school I played basketball and volleyball, but I was not talented enough to play either of those at the Division I level. When a friend walked on to Princeton's team two years ago I was reminded of the sport, and I decided I wanted to walk on at Dartmouth. I love having every minute of my time scheduled, I love to be outside on the river, and I love the trust and support between teammates.
What is something about you that might come as a surprise to your teammates?
I spend my summers teaching canoeing at a summer camp in Wisconsin, so I normally paddle facing forward!
What extracurricular activities are you involved in on campus?
Beside rowing, I sing in the Gospel Choir and am a part of WISP (Women in Science Project).
What are your future plans, if any?
As for now I am undecided as to a major and career path, but I think I am interested in becoming a doctor.
