Men's Lightweight Rowing
at Cornell
Q & A with Christopher Ng
Why Dartmouth?
I chose Dartmouth because I wanted to study engineering. I’m a dual degree engineering student. It is a special program where I spend 3 years at Colby College where I receive my degree in biochemistry and 2 years at Dartmouth where I receive my engineering degree. It is a 5 year program overall.
How long have you been rowing and what got you interested in rowing?
I began rowing my first year at Dartmouth. Previously I had never participated in an intense endurance sport. I was a baseball player in high school. Then I started getting into running and marathon training. During that time I injured my knee. When I got on campus I wanted to try something new and rowing seemed like the intense challenge that I was looking for.
Have you won any academic or rowing awards recently?
I received a grant from Colby as part of a unique program for minorities in science to conduct research for the school.
Tell me something interesting about you that might come as a surprise to
your teammates.
I used to be an art major and almost went to art school. In high school I won a national award, the Gold Key, the highest award, from Scholastic for all my artwork in my art portfolio. I love art but switched to biochemistry after taking organic chemistry, my favorite subject. Now I conduct research for a biochemistry professor at Colby, working with cancer and anticancer compounds, and was recently published in a scientific journal.
What other activities do you participate in on campus?
I’m involved with a fraternity at Dartmouth. At Colby I am a chemistry tutor, student researcher, and I teach English to first graders at a local elementary school.
What are your future plans, if any.
I plan on getting a job as an engineer or conduct biochemical research. Then I plan on going to graduate school.
